Why can’t PPH/HDPE plastic storage tanks be used to store gasoline?
Plastic storage tanks are made from polyethylene using a special rotational molding process. They are lightweight, leak-free, corrosion-resistant, impact-resistant, and durable. PPH plastic tanks can store most inorganic acids, alkalis, salt solutions, and many organic solvents, making them a practical alternative to metal tanks for corrosive or clean chemical storage.

Plastic storage tanks are made of polyethylene through a special rotational molding process. They offer many advantages, including no welding, no leakage, non-toxicity, light weight, aging resistance, impact resistance, corrosion resistance, and long service life. Their advantages in integral molding, structural integrity, corrosion resistance, and durability are especially outstanding. PPH plastic storage tanks can be used for the storage and reaction of most inorganic acids, alkalis, salt solutions, and many organic solvents. They can partially replace stainless steel, titanium, nickel, high-grade alloy steel, and other materials, making them ideal storage containers for corrosive and clean solutions in the chemical industry.Gasoline is a flammable substance. When gasoline is stored or transported in a plastic storage tank, friction between the gasoline and the inner wall of the tank may generate static electricity. Since plastic is an insulating material, the electrical charge on the tank is not easily transferred. When the charge accumulates to a certain level, electrostatic discharge may occur, producing sparks that can ignite gasoline and cause accidents.
The flash point of gasoline is below 28°C, and its lower explosive limit is below 10%. During filling, pouring, or vibration, gasoline rubs against the inner wall of the plastic tank, and the contact potential difference causes electron movement, resulting in the accumulation of positive and negative charges and static electricity. When the accumulated charge reaches a certain voltage, it may discharge and generate electrostatic sparks, igniting gasoline or a gasoline-air mixture and causing fire or explosion. Therefore, for safety reasons, plastic tanks should not be used to store gasoline.During petroleum transportation, friction between oil and plastic can easily generate static electricity. Both gasoline and plastic are insulating materials and do not conduct electricity easily. As a result, the electricity generated by friction is not easily dissipated, which may lead to explosion or fire.
